It Gets Better: Newcastle LGBT Student Society

Our undergraduates are running an exciting and heartfelt campaing called “It Gets Better”. Well it does, but you can hear their stories on the following UTube movie:

The ‘It Gets Better’ campaign involves donning special t-shirts to raise a greater awareness of the campaign across the city on the 13th February 2012. The LGBT society is meeting in the Mens Bar between 8.30pm and 10.00pm and then heading into town with the goal of Powerhouse later on. Contact us if you need further information.

The film follows Russell and Glen, who have a one night stand after a lonely Friday night meeting in a bar. They both assume it’s a fleeting fling until they discover they have stumbled upon an intense emotional connection, and decisions must be made about what they each want from their lives. International Women’s Day

We had pleasure, as ever, working with the Diversity team at the University to help suggest speakers for the International Women’s Day celebrations. The University had planned to pull together a panel of speakers so we threw in some names of female alumni who we thought would be inspirational speakers. All arts grads: Rebecca Howard, Jane Nolan and Teresa Graham. Great to see them on campus and talking in terms of how their days here shaped their future career. But also great to hear how being a women makes them different and its that difference that has driven them. I had an interesting chat with the Chair of the evening and suggested that the visibility helped. Well you are a woman, so you would appear different, particularly in male dominated settings, but how did this run parallel with the same experiences of LGB where visibility wasnt on the agenda. The answer I got was very much, we are academics, those issues are non issues. Which is fine but not all of us are academics and the whole point is, and we are going back to basics here, that visibility is required, particularly in large organisations and communities of people where it is pretty white, male, middle-aged and where the girls are just starting to peak through. I sense there is a cautiousness out there in the upper echelons of the University and they struggle with the value of something like Mosaic even though the same struggles and values experienced by women have very clear similarities to those of the LGB and T community. Maybe next year we could have an in conversation style event for the rainbow crowd. And why not! I could raise my fist across the dinner table and shout pinky power. That would meet one of my new year’s resolutions.

Thanks to everyone for coming along to the Mosaic/UCU film night at the Tyneside last week. It was great to see so many people out and how packed was the quiz afterwards. I think there’s a real need out there to do more of these sort of events, people are crying out to do something different on an evening. Next up we have the Mosaic First Tuesday lunch, today at 12:30 in Northern Stage. Come along and say hi. It’s just an excuse to get meet up and hear your views on things. I’m really famished writing this post mind. J

LGBT History Month

Its all happening in February as Newcastle University launches its Diversity Season. A few months of events celebrating all things diverse on campus. Mosaic is excited to be running another film night joint with the UCU and Tyneside Cinema. This time around we will be showing Julianne Moore and Annette Bening in ‘ The Kids Are Alright’ a tale of lesbian parents coping with the appearance of their childrens birth Father. Its a great film and thats not just because its got Julianne in it (I love that woman, but not in that way). The film will be hosted on 23rd February about 6pm and there will be a queer cinema quiz in the bar afterwards. Sign up to our e-mail list as we’ll be mailing out next week with all the details.
